This Keto Creamed Country Style Cabbage makes me thing of southern country comfort food. I just want to load up my summer picnic plates with this, piled high next to my favorite BBQ dishes. It’s a bit indulgent without being over the top while being filling and full of flavor. My personal favorite is serving this keto creamed cabbage with grilled chicken thighs and some veggies.

Since this Creamed Country Style Cabbage can be served hot or cold, it’s an ideal keto side dish to make ahead of time. You can make it the night before or morning of a picnic and not worry about rushing around preparing a dish before you leave.

While this keto side dish always reminds me of the south, there is some debate over the real origin, that similar dishes may originate from German or Pennsylvania Dutch dishes. While it’s that or Southern fried….this keto creamed cabbage is going to be a hit all summer long!

How To Make Keto Creamed Country Style Cabbage:

Step One:  Melt ½ cup of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step Two:  Add shredded cabbage to the skillet once the butter is mostly melted

Step Three:  Mix in seasoning salt and pepper to taste. Have a light hand with the seasoning salt, a little goes a long way and you don’t want to overdo it.

Step Four:  Add in ½ cup of bacon crumbles. Stir to combine them well with the cabbage

Step Five:  Cook the cabbage and bacon mixture for 3-5 minutes. You want the bacon crisp but not burnt.

Step Six:  Pour ½ cup of heavy whipping cream into the cabbage mixture and stir completely.

Step Seven:  Lower the heat to medium-low and simmer the cabbage until the cream cooks down and the cabbage is tender.

Step Eight:  Remove from heat and SERVE!

This dish can be served warm or cold.  I personally like to make extra and serve it warm the first time then refrigerate the rest for leftovers.

Can I Use Pre-Packaged Cabbage Mixtures in This Keto Creamed Slaw?

Yes, if you don’t feel like slicing the cabbage yourself or are short on time, you can use several different pre-packaged shredded cabbage mixtures.  It is perfectly fine to use mixtures with carrots too.

What are some other variations to this Creamed Country Style Cabbage?

To give the dish a slightly brighter presentation, you can use red cabbage too.  You can also do a combination of traditional green cabbage and red cabbage. To really spice it up a bit use Broccoli Slaw mix.

Can I freeze this Keto Creamed Country Style Cabbage?

Yes, absolutely you can freeze this dish.  If you are making this dish with the intention of freezing it my suggestion would be to cook it a bit less and leave it a bit crunchier so when you re-heat it the cabbage still has some crunch and does not get too mushy.

How Can I Turn This Keto Side Dish Into a Complete Meal?

If you really want to kick this to the next level and even make it into a complete meal, you can add ground beef to this mixture.  That makes a one-stop meal in your skillet. You can also add some sour cream to give this dish just a slightly different flavor.  You can also throw in some capers to give it a bit of Mediterranean flavor.  The possibilities are endless in turning this keto side dish into a delicious country-style meal.
